My question is this: Why would one, with the full knowledge of the implications of what most definitely will happen afterwards, do something that is not even useful, or applicable in life, or technically have no good output? (No, it's not drugs.)

I would guess that they do it to see if the implications that will most definitely happen will actually happen. Most probably just to say they did it or for fun. This is a good question.
