"I don't know," he whispered back. Now that he was here, it was.... awkward.
He mustered his courage and attempted to clear his mind. Finally, he had his question.
"How did Nightwing the Foul survive the Great War?" he asked. "I saw him die. I saw the life leave his body."
"It was a trick," all of the Council members said in unison.
A female dragon came forward, green scales glittering in the light. "You thought him slain, for he vanished into mist, like evil spirits do when they perish."
A male Iisowy stood from his place in the clear water. "However, in your weariness, you forgot one cruicial thing."
"Nightwing is no mere spirit," saild a male Xyxx. "But is as real as you or I."
Reyx watched them. He was used to the way that the Council answered questions. "But then, how did he do that?"
"His magic is strong," came the reply. "He fooled you. He fooled us all. He transformed himself, and fled beneath the earth. You thought him dead. Even we Sages thought him to be dead. But we were all of us decieved by his wicked magic. He lives yet, and he has grown strong."
"Then how am I to defeat his evil?" asked Reyx.
"You must be sure of his death. Take his head. Only by this can you be certain."
The Sages knew that Reyx had more questions, but intstead their eyes traveled to Syrah.

Syrah squeaked, and ducked behind Reyx's leg. "Why are they all staring at me? It's really putting me off." Syrah whispered.

"They're waiting for you to ask a question." Reyx said. "Search yourself."

There was a question Syrah was itching to know. She stepped out from behind Reyx's leg, and asked: "Who are my Parents?"

"Your lineage is obscured by mist and doubt," The Sages said in unison.
One stepped forward, eyes on Syrah. "Your mother was free, as wild as the earth is green, and as bright as the sun within her heart."
Another Sage stepped forward. "Your father is hidden from our eyes, child." His eyes looked distant. "But he is powerful, and has much that we should fear. You must discover for yourself his identity."

"WHAT?!" Syrah couldn't help but shout. "So I come here, build up to all that, and you don't know? You're the Almighty Sages, for goodness sake! I've heard many a story of amazing prophecys coming from this place! And I ask the only question I really wish to know, and you can't tell me?" Syrah exploded. "Ahrg. What was the point of all this?!"

"Patience," one of the Sages said, raising a webbed hand. "We do not know all. As much as we may seem to." There was a mysterious power at work, and Reyx got the feeling that the Sages knew more than they were letting onto. "Some things must be discovered by the one seeking the answers. It is not yet your time to know. Seek peace, and ponder upon the question. You may seek the answer when you know truly what you ask."

"I can tell you're not telling me something. I can tell. I can smell it in the air. You wish not to tell me my own heratige? Shikahn and I know you people are holding on to something. Why?" Syrah asked.

"It is not your time to know yet, young one," said the large red dragon. He watched her with his glittering green eyes. "And you may not want to know... even when you are ready."

Syrah ducked behind Reyx's leg again, pondering what the dragon had said. Now it worried her. A lot. She looked up at Reyx, as if hoping for an answer.

Reyx looked down at young Syrah, but he held no answer for her.
The Sages motioned for attention. "Speak again, Reyx Greatwind. Many questions are ours to answer... and many answers are yours to find."
That wasn't comforting, but Reyx pushed on. "Where does the Foul One's lair lie?" he asked.
The Sages looked upon them with a misty expression. "That, too, is hidden from our eyes," they said in unison.
Another member stepped forward and recited, "That is an answer you too must face yourself. He lies in the west; We can tell you no more."
"Then tell me, too," Reyx said, puzzled. "How long was it before I woke? And why?"
"The spell you wove did not work as you intended," one of the Council members said. "You thought it to mend your wounds, using the spirits of the world."
"You interpereted its meaning wrong, however," said the large female dragon. "The spirits healed you, but their purpose was not for that."
"They sealed you away that night," said the male dragon. "And read your heart. They knew what you had done. Their great magic wove itself around you, and the spell was set. You would awaken when such evil as Nightwing rose again in the land of Prox."
"A century has passed since that night on the mountain."
Reyx nodded. He knew it had been some time. He just hadn't known how long. A hundred years. And if he got the math right in his head, that boiled down to 342 years or so of Earth time. "Strange," he said. "It felt like just one night. Perhaps a few days."

"You were definetly gone for longer than one night. I've heard many a story of you. " Syrah mumbled. Syrah, will you ask my question?Shikahn asked kindly. "What is it, Shikahn?" Shikahn said the question, and Syrah relayed it. "I have another question." Syrah said, boldly. "I felt great good, two years ago, like great good had come to the land. Then I felt it even more, only a few days before, hours before I met Reyx Greatwind. Now I ask... I felt great Evil just a few minutes ago. Great evil, like something hugely Evil had once rose again. Do you know what it is?"

"We know," said the Sages all at once. The Xyxx male stepped forward.
"This is why we asked for your council. We sensed the evil as well."
A female Dromaen stepped forward and hissed, "Nightwing is growing ssstrong in the west. He has broken free of his prissson beneath the earth, and is again at his full, terrible might."
A dromaean male spoke now. "He has gathered his creations to him. He has given them new life. He has poured more of his evil spirit into them than ever before."
"Now they pose much more danger to the land," said the gravelly voice of an Ankylian male. "They are no longer shadow and air. They no longer dissolve into mist. They too, are anow as real as you or I. Beware. Nightwing was not strong enough before to make anything else but his shadow creatures."
"But now, " whooped an Iisowy female, "He has risen. Even now, he is coming to the surface. Even now, he makes his new lair. And his anger is more potent than ever before. Beware."
"A word of caution to you and those who will follow you," said the red dragon. "Nightwing is not the greatest danger that you face. Even we cannot see what may be the creature that stirs now. But we know that it was because of it that Nightwing was able to ressurect himself. Nightwing the Foul is only the beginning."

"I wouldn't worry. I'll grow strong under Reyx's care and training, and then we shall defeat the Evil that dares call this land home. Once Reyx has taken that dragon's head, I will take his black heart and burn it, 'til it is no more than pitiful ash. Then that force that ressurected him will pay for it's crimes." Syrah grinned. We are becoming more like one another. Soon, we will become one, and then, when the time comes, you can choose an new name, and a title. "Yes, wise council of sages, I will ask no more. I wish to learn everything myself. I will train hard, and fight hard, and then Reyx will save the lands!" Syrah stopped, and bowed her head. "I wish to thank you, for all you have departed. Reyx, ask away."

"I too am finished with my questions," Reyx said. "Thank you, Council."
"Use our wisdom well," said the council. "It will help you along your journey. Be careful. Your journey will be long, and difficult."
"At times, it may seem impossible," offered another Council member.
"You shall prevail. But you shall not do it alone. You will discover new friends... and old ones whom you thought lost in time."
"On this note, we leave you."
Reyx and Syrah were escorted outside of the Council chamber. The Xyxx Sage that had led them out turned to speak. "There will be a ceremony for you held tonight at sunset. It will be held at the base of the Falls Of Flame." He gestured to the giant waterfall that lay in the distance, massive and thundering. Just at that moment, a couple of dragons were soaring through the thick mist that the Falls generated, the wall of water pouring behind them, reducing their shapes to pricks of darkness among the roaring white water and mist. "After the ceremony, there shall be a feast in honor of your awakening, Reyx Greatwind. And the head Sages will speak with you again."
Reyx nodded. "We shall be there, Sage."
"Good," the Xyxx said, smiling. "We await your presence. And yours too, Syrah, of course." With that, the Xyxx turned and returned to the Tree.
"This will be interesting," Reyx said distractedly. His mood brightened shortly afterward. "But you will be able to watch the Falls of Flame before we depart. They shine their brightest at sunset." He looked at the sky; it was a clear day, and the dusty rings that surrounded the planet were visible high in the sky. It would be a good night for the Falls of Flame to show their true colors.
