1) Misrepresenting yourself on the Internet usually leads to misunderstandings if you ever meet an online friend in real life.
2) It's confusing, especially if you aren't mature enough to be over 18. People in chatrooms may assume you have a learning disorder, insult you, simply talk down to you or ignore you entirely, because you seem ignorant instead of just young.
3) Someone may drag you into a discussion about something you are too young to understand, like, say, the early Bush administration. You will then have to deal with the awkwardness of admitting you lied about your age.
4) You may get yelled at by an actual 18-year-old for an ignorant comment. The actual 18-year-old will then have unknowingly yelled at a little kid, and you will have your feelings hurt.
5) Last, and MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL!!!! There are a lot of aggressive people out there. Because soliciting, harassing or threatening a child is more of a crime then soliciting, harassing or threatening an adult, simply telling someone your actual age is sometimes enough to get them to back off.
That being said, I hope you all remember these top five reasons and carry them with you from chatroom to chatroom until the day you actually turn 18.

Why have you written this?
Most people here are telling the truth about their age. And we may be young, but heck, most of us have had worse than being yelled at. I'm very used to it, people yell at me even though I'm only 14. And they know it. I'm sure also most people know this already. And I'm sure someone who is 17 would be fine, lying about their age for just one year.

I don't think I've ever pretended to be older than I really am.
But these are good tips. Thank you, Donnie.

It's impossible for me to act my age. LOL. I always act like a little kid, especially IRL.

Why have you written this?
A more important question: Why do I bother?
If you've read this post and for some unimaginable reason can't comprehend why I've started this thread, simply follow this advice: Don't lie about your age. If you don't understand why you shouldn't lie about your age, don't worry about it. If you don't lie about your age, that's awesome.

I can't understand why anyone would pretend to be someone other than who they are, and that includes age.

I can't understand why anyone would pretend to be someone other than who they are, and that includes age. I've had to pretend I was human on other sites lest people think I was insane.

Indeed, I am. In both a good, and a bad way.

I don't act my age. People also believe me when I say how old I am.

Lots of people think i am older than i actually am, perhaps because I act older or perhaps because i look older. I don't really know. They're always surprised when I tell them my true age - 15 years, by the way, not the less than one year age that is my age by my species' reckoning.

If you are refering to me as a he, then you are wrong. I am a female, as it says underneath my picture.
Maybe i should change my name to something less likely to be mistaken for a male name...
