Last noght my dogs were barking at something outside. so my mum went and looked at what they were barking at and she said she saw a giant gecko/lizard thing and it was making a funny noise. it was multicoloured and fast and as big as a dinner plate! Any idea what it was?

From Wikipedia:
Simple explanation: Ambiguity is used to describe how one thing can be interpreted in different ways.
Now, back to topic.

Still, what size dinner plate? They could be 8 inches, 13 inches, 15 inches, 10 inches, et cetera.

Hence the term ambiguity. Continue.

It could easily have been an escaped pet lizard of some sort. If it was escaped, then I can imagine it panicking, as it's in a completely new enviroment. Dogs tend to bark at anything big/colourful/unusual. My dog will bark at people who look strange, such as a person running, a person with a hoodie, or a person wearing a mask.
Also, if it was an alien, it may have done something more sensible, rather then rousing dogs to bark at it.

Marine iguanas are pretty big, bearded dragons are quite big, and bearded dragons are often kept as pets. They also escape a lot.

Komodo dragons live in Papua New guinea and similar places. They are two and a half metres long, give or take, with a bite that can poison you over several days. They rarely kill their prey straight away. Instead, they bite in a few times and then groups of them follow it until it dies.
