I just thought of something...what if Einstein and Newton and all the great minds of the world were really controllers. It would explain why they're so smart because yeerks are more advanced than humans (at least for now).

I don't think they were. Yeerks probably didn't want to come to Earth way back then; they were probably conquering the Hork-Bajir or Taxxon home world then.

Aren't Taxxons voluntary hosts? I heard somewhere that they gave in to the yeerks in exchange for being fed.

Not all of them are voluntary. There is a small resistance group of Taxxons led by Arbron(sp?) who came to the Animorphs to be able to morph so they could end the unending hunger. Or something like that. I don't remember the exact details of the book. It's been too long.
Anyway, they first showed up in the Andalite Chronicles.
