1.3 million?! That's till a heck of a lot, even though 0.19% seems like nothing. Are yeerks a race large in numbers? Surely 6 billion yeerks don't even exist?!

There are approximately ten million Yeerks in existence as a good estimate...although most of them are on their homeworld, trapped by andalites. thus an accurate, complete census is not possible. the yeerk empire has a force of around five million. While this may not seem like a lot to our numbers in billions of individuals, this force of five million yeerks started with only 250,000 or so. almost exactly forty years ago. the yeerks reproduce large numbers of progeny, in the thousands, but the process is under regulation by the yeerk council. most of these five million yeerks are on the hork-bajir home planet, the taxxon home planet or patrolling space. a few hundred thousand still do not have hosts, but population is expected to increase.

Ok, I'm trying to work out the maths of that, although I'm not very good at maths so someone might wanna correct me! So that means the yeerk numbers have risen by 2000% in the last 40 years! That's doubling every 2 years! So as long as the speed of the yeerk populuation growth stays constant, in 2 years time there might be 10,000,000 years needing hosts. In 10 years there might be 2.5billion yeerks! In another 40 years there could be 10,000,000,000 yeerks!

This is of course assuming yeerk empire population growth remains constant. right now it is sporadic and controlled by the council, so the rate could very well change. it also assumes the yeerk population is not decimated in some way in the future...at the rate this war is going, who knows..
as for yeerks on the homeworld...well, due to crowding issues there is typically only one spawning at a pool at a time...they do not have the same overcrowding issues humans have, generally. but again it is difficult to tell how many yeerks are actually living on the homeworld at the present.

Why would the council want to restrict population growth?

More Yeerks take more resources. As long as they have hosts, they're useful...but I have heard from a Council member herself that they feed their own to the Taxxon-Controllers if they don't have enough resources to keep the Yeerks alive. It is at the least, a better death than Kandrona starvation.

Genocide...that is terrible. All the more reason to hate the Yeerk slime. Other than the rebels, that is.

The Council doesn't care whether their own live or die. All they care about is power.

Yes, but surely they can't have much power if they kill off their underlings?

few people have the power and ability to oppose the council.
and yes, it's something of a balance between more yeerks for invasion forces, and too many unhosted yeerks taking up resources and space. but the drive for more infestation is much greater than concern about resources.
